Shropshire is blessed with many of the UK’s top rivers passing through it including the Severn and many of its tributaries. It is a great place for fishing for barbel, chub and even river pike.

River Severn, Shrewsbury

  • Castlefields, Shrewsbury – Excellent chub, barbel, dace and trout fishing from the banks and by boat below the weir. Day tickets available.
  • Cressage, Cressage – Rural stretches flowing past fields and woodland containing barbel, chub, dace and brown trout. Some private fishing rights.
  • Bridgnorth, Bridgnorth – Good barbel, chub, perch and pike fishing from the banks in the town. Day tickets available.
  • Major river with mixed coarse fish and trout stocks. Access and conditions vary along its length through Shropshire.

River Teme, Ludlow

  • Ludford Bridge, Ludlow – Trout and grayling fishing in the town section. Day permits available.
  • Ashford Carbonel, Ashford Carbonel – Rural trout fishing through farmland and woods. Some private fishing rights.
  • Tenbury Wells, Tenbury Wells – Stretches below the town hold grayling as well as trout, dace and chub.
  • Picturesque river flowing through varied countryside. Known for its trout and grayling fishing.

River Clun, Clun

  • Clun Bridge, Clun – Excellent trout and grayling fishing on this rural stretch near the village. Day permits available.
  • Purslow, Purslow – More remote section flowing through farmland, good for wild brown trout.
  • Small tributary of the Teme containing wild brown trout and grayling. Flows through countryside.

River Rea, Shifnal

  • Shifnal, Shifnal – Chub, dace and resident brown trout near the town park. Day tickets available.
  • Upton Magna, Upton Magna – More remote dace and trout fishing through rural farmland.
  • Small lowland river with trout and coarse fish populations. Flows through villages and farmland.

River Tern, Market Drayton

  • Norbury, Norbury – Rural dace, chub and brown trout fishing through farmland near the village. Some private fishing rights.
  • Market Drayton, Market Drayton – Good chub, perch and pike fishing available on town stretches. Day tickets available.
  • Small tributary of the Severn containing both trout and coarse fish. Flows through villages and countryside.

River Perry, Chirbury

  • Melverley, Melverley – Excellent wild brown trout and grayling fishing along rural stretches near the village. Permits required.
  • Chirbury, Chirbury – Good trout and grayling sport in scenic countryside near Chirbury. Day tickets available.
  • Pentre, Pentre – More remote trout fishing in Pentre section flowing through farmland.
  • Small tributary of the Vyrnwy known for its wild brown trout and grayling populations. Flows through rural Shropshire.

Shropshire Union Canal

  • Adderley, Adderley – Good bream, roach and perch fishing. Day tickets available.
  • Norbury Junction, Norbury – Popular match fishing venue with big bream and roach. Permits required.
  • Audlem, Audlem – Excellent fishing for roach, bream and hybrids. Day tickets available.
  • Major canal crossing Shropshire. Known for its bream, roach and perch fishing.

Llangollen Canal

  • Chirk, Chirk – Decent bream, roach and perch fishing below the aqueduct. Permits required.
  • Ellesmere, Ellesmere – Good bream, roach and rudd sport. Popular match canal. Day tickets available.
  • Frankton Junction, Frankton – Roach, bream and perch fishing below the locks. Permit required.
  • Scenic canal with good stocks of bream, roach and perch throughout its Shropshire sections.

Birmingham Main Line Canal

  • Brewood, Brewood – Stretches by the village contain bream, roach and carp. Day tickets available.
  • Wheaton Aston, Wheaton Aston – Roach, bream and perch fishing. Occasional matches held. Permits required.
  • Narrow canal with resident coarse fish populations. Crosses rural Shropshire.
